The Little Girl Summary
This story is about a little girl named Kezia. She was afraid of her father. To her, he seemed to be very big. She considered him a giant. The father never showed his love for the little girl. He never played with her. Every morning, before going to office, he would kiss her. She would also say ‘good-bye’ to him. But she would heave a sigh of relief when he went to work. He returned from office in the evening. Her mother would ask her to take off her father’s shoes. But Kezia always felt nervous in the presence of her father. She would stammer while talking to him.
Next week was her father’s birthday. Her grandmother suggested to her that she should make a pin-cushion to gift it to her father. She stitched a beautiful pin-cushion of yellow silk. But she did not have anything to stuff the pin-cushion with. She went to her mother’s bed-room. There she found many sheets of fine paper on the table. She tore them into small pieces and filled the pin-cushion with the same.
Those papers were very important for her father. They contained her father’s great speech which he had to deliver for the Port Authority. That night there was a hue and cry in the house. Rooms were searched and servants were questioned. At last it was found out that Kezia had torn the papers. Her father beat her with a ruler. He told her never to touch anything that didn’t belong to her.
Suddenly one day, her mother became ill. She was admitted to a hospital. Her grandmother also accompanied her mother. So Kezia was left alone home at night. She was alone in the darkness of the room. While sleeping, she had a nightmare. In her dream, she saw a butcher with a knife and a rope. He was coming towards her. Kezia woke up trembling. She cried for her grandmother.
But she saw her father standing there. He asked her what the matter was. She told him about her fearful dream. Father took her with him to his bed. Kezia crept close to her father. She snuggled her head under his arm. Suddenly she realized how good and loving her father was. She realised that her father had to work very hard all day. He became too tired to play with her in the evening. While Kezia lay close to her father, she said, “What a big heart you’ve got, father dear !”

यह कहानी केज़िया नाम की एक नन्हीं लड़की के बारे में है। वह अपने पिता से बहुत डरती थी। उसे ऐसा प्रतीत हुआ करता मानो उसके पिता का शरीर एक दैत्य के समान विशाल था। पिता कभी भी उस नन्हीं लड़की के लिए प्यार ज़ाहिर नहीं करता था। वह कभी उसके साथ खेलता नहीं था। हर सुबह दफ्तर जाने से पहले वह उसे भूमा करता और लड़को भी उसे अलविदा कहती। किन्तु पिता के काम पर जाने के बाद लड़की चैन की साँस लेती। सायंकाल को जब वह घर लौटता तो नन्हीं लड़की उसकी नजरों से बचने की कोशिश करती। वह हमेशा अपने पिता के सामने कंपकंपी अनुभव करती। वह उससे बात करते समय हकलाने लगती थी।
अगले सप्ताह उसके पिता का जन्मदिन था। उसकी दादी ने सुझाव दिया कि उसे तोहफे के तौर पर अपने पिता के लिए एक पिन-कुशन बनाना चाहिए। लड़की ने पीले रेशम के कपड़े का एक सुन्दर पिन- कुशन बनाया। लेकिन उसके पास पिन-कुशन में भरने के लिए कुछ नहीं था। वह अपनी मां के शयन कक्ष में गई। वहां उसने बढ़िया कागज के कुछ पन्ने देखे। उसने इन्हें छोटे टुकड़ों में फाड़ लिया और पिन-कुशन में भर दिया।
किन्तु वे कागज उसके पिता के लिए बहुत महत्त्वपूर्ण थे। उनमें उसके पिता का वह भाषण लिखा था जो उसे पोर्ट अथौरिटी के लिए देना था। उस रात इन कागजों के सम्बन्ध में घर में बहुत हंगामा हो गया। सब कमरों में ढूँढा गया और नौकरों से भी पूछा गया। अन्त में पता चला कि केज़िया ने कागज़ों को फाड़ दिया था। उसके पिता ने एक स्तर से उसकी पिटाई की। उसने केलिया से कहा कि इससे केजिया को सबक मिल जाएगा कि वह भविष्य में किसी दूसरे की चीज़ों को न छुए।
अचानक एक दिन केज़िया की मां बीमार पड़ गई। उसे अस्पताल में भर्ती किया गया। उसकी दादी भी उसकी मां के साथ गई। इसलिए केज़िया घर में अकेली रह गई। अब वह बावर्चिन ऐलिस की देख-रेख में थी। रात में केज़िया को भय अनुभव हुआ। वह अपने कमरे में अकेली थी उसे एक भयानक सपना आया-एक कसाई छुरा और रस्सी लेकर उसकी तरफ चला आ रहा था। वह काँपती हुई जाग उठी और अपनी दादी के लिए चिल्लाने लगी।
किन्तु जब केज़िया जागी तो उसने अपने सामने अपने पिता को खड़ा हुआ पाया। उसने केजिया से पूछा कि बात क्या थी । केज़िया ने उसे अपने भयानक सपने के बारे में बताया। पिता केज़िया को अपने साथ अपने बिस्तर पर ले गया और उसे अपनी छाती से लगाकर लेट गया। तभी अचानक केजिया को महसूस हुआ कि उसका पिता बहुत दयालु और प्यार करने वाला था। वह समझ गई कि उसके पिता को दिन भर कठिन परिश्रम करना पड़ता था । इसलिए वह सायंकाल तक थक जाता था और इसीलिए उसके साथ खेलने का समय नहीं निकाल सकता था। अपने पिता के साथ चिपकते हुए केज़िया ने कहा, “पिता जी, आपका दिल कितना बड़ा है!”
